Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care

Patients of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are served by two Ambulatory Care Pharmacies. The Ambulatory Care Pharmacies' staff are available to provide patients with prescription services seven days a week. Pharmacists monitor patients' medications and work with doctors to ensure each patient receives appropriate drug therapy.

Staff prepare and dispense supplies of medications to patients. During this process, patients medication histories are updated; patients are offered assistance with medication-related problems; pharmacists thoroughly review prescriptions for proper dosing and identify potential interactions with other medications or food; and pharmacists provide clear and complete instructions for storage of medications.

Pharmacists also counsel patients about the appropriate use of medications. The purpose of this counseling is to discuss the various aspects of drug therapy and to answer any questions patients may have about taking medications. Printed information about the medications being dispensed is also provided to patients to assist with the counseling process.  Staff in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies strive to provide patients with the best level of pharmaceutical care possible.
