External Pharmacy Service/Management Contracts

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care provides pharmacy services to other hospitals in Iowa on a contractual basis. At the current time there are three hospitals that receive these services.

Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, Iowa, receives pharmacy services on a full-time basis. Forty hours of pharmacist time per week are provided to the hospital. The hospital also has a full-time pharmacy technician. Services are provided to acute patients (average daily census 5 patients), skilled nursing patients (average daily census 6-10 patients) and long-term care patients (average daily census 2-3 patients). Services include both clinical services and medication distribution. A Pyxis Medstation 2000 unit has been installed to provide medication accessibility when the pharmacist is not on duty.

Marengo Memorial Hospital serves as the practice site for a rotation for pharmacy practice residents. Dave Weetman, Assistant Director, Acute Care Pharmacy serves as the Director of this program. A pharmacy practice specialist or staff pharmacist orients each resident to this rotation and, together with Dave Weetman, precepts this rotation.

The Department has a contract to provide pharmacy management services to Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, Iowa, and Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. The Department employs pharmacists who serve as Assistant Director in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care and as Director of Pharmacy in each facility. Currently, Dawn Moore is the Director of Pharmacy at Ottumwa, and Jeff Houseman is Director of Pharmacy at Mercy. The pharmacists and technicians at each facility are employed by that hospital. The department also provides additional support to each facility through a consulting arrangement that makes available other resources from the Department of Pharmaceutical Care. These may be clinical pharmacy specialists to assist with development of clinical programs or other specialized staff from UIHC to assist with department management and development.

The department also oversees the outpatient pharmacy which fills approximately 2,300 prescriptions monthly

Mercy Medical Center in Clinton has approximately 170 acute care beds. The Pharmacy Department has, one Lead Pharmacist position, 5 staff pharmacist positions and thirteen pharmacy technicians, and 4 pharmacy courier positions. The department also utilizes Pyxis Medstation unit based medication cabinets. The department utilizes a decentralized clinical pharmacist Monday through Friday and does skilled transition, and nursing home consulting. Mercy serves as preceptor to University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and provides a Clinical Medical Rotation along with a Hospital Rotation for them. The department moved into a newly remodeled facility in 2000.
