Clinical Pharmacist

 

Clinical Pharmacist positions are available for patient care unit-based and satellite-based clinical practice opportunities.  Clinical Pharmacists participate in medical team rounds and provide pharmaceutical care services, including drug therapy monitoring, pharmacokinetic dosing, patient teaching and drug information, and act as preceptors for  Pharm.D. students for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  Opportunities exist in adult and pediatric areas for various specialty practices, such as internal medicine, adult hematology/oncology and pediatric intensive care.

Pharmacy Technician

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care employs Pharmacy Technicians in the following areas: Acute Pharmaceutical Care, Ambulatory Care Pharmacies, IV Admixtures, and Pharmacy Purchasing.

Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians complete a variety of functional activities. The role of Pharmacy Technician is essential to the UIHC Department of Pharmaceutical Care’s goal of providing accurate and timely services to patients.  Functions include:

  • Process medication orders written by prescribers

  • Read and interpret the order

  • Use computer to enter the order

  • Calculate the dose and quantity to dispense

  • Prepare labels for the medication

  • Prepare the medication

  • Deliver medications to patient care areas

  • Generate appropriate records related to medication distribution and dispensing
  • Use aseptic technique in laminar flow hoods to compound sterile products, including cytotoxic drugs
  • Utilize equipment such as electronic tablet counters, computerized label printers, and pharmaceutical packaging and compounding equipment
  • Communicate with the general public, patients and other health care personnel

Technician applicants must have a high school education, must be able to type 15 words per minute, have 2 years experience in a position directly related to the natural sciences, or one year experience as a Pharmacy Technician, or a combination of related experience and related post-high school education to equal two years.

 

Clerical and Support Staff

 

Clerical and support staff complete a variety of tasks that promote efficient daily operations within the Department of Pharmaceutical Care.  The following delineate some, but not all, of the functions completed by clerical and support staff:
  • Copy and distribute professional publications, department memos and minutes, UIHC announcements and publications to department staff
  • Triage phone calls
  • Record and maintain records
  • Retrieve, sort, and prepare documents
  • Perform purchasing functions
  • Develop and maintain computer databases or spreadsheets

 

Student Employees

 

University of Iowa students are employed by the Department of Pharmaceutical Care as pharmacy technicians in Acute Pharmaceutical Care, Ambulatory Care Pharmacies, and IV Admixtures.

Student technicians who work in the Acute Pharmaceutical Care satellites must first complete a paid two-week training class. Training classes for student technicians are given during the summer and over the winter semester break. Student technicians who work in Acute Pharmaceutical Care – lower level, Ambulatory Care Pharmacies, or IV Admixtures receive on-the-job training.

Students may work 16 – 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer vacation. Scheduled hours may include weekday evenings, weekends, and holidays.

If you are a pharmacy student, you may earn internship hours. You must be registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners and have a pharmacist preceptor before hours may be counted (we will assign a preceptor for you as needed). The necessary internship forms may be obtained from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.

The starting wage for students is $10.00 per hour. After 1000 hours of employment, students receive $11.00 per hour. For non-pharmacy students who have worked 2000 hours or for pharmacy students that have worked 1000 hours, have completed their P2 year and are trained to perform additional duties, the hourly wage is $12.00 per hour. Holiday pay is 1½ times the hourly rate.
