Biographical Sketches of Residency Preceptors


Megan Alderton, Pharm.D.

Dr. Alderton is a Clinical Pharmacist in Internal Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  She serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students.  Dr. Alderton received her Pharm.D. degree from Drake University and completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  Her areas of interest include diabetes and nutritional support.

Amy Becker, Pharm.D., BCOP

Dr. Becker is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Hematology/Oncology. She serves as a preceptor to residents in the outpatient clinic and the hematology/oncology and bone marrow transplantation inpatient care units of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Becker received her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of Iowa, and completed a residency in Advanced Clinical Pharmacy at Ohio State University. Her areas of interest include the treatment of hematologic malignancies, antiemetic therapy, and pain management.

Elizabeth Beltz, Pharm.D.

Dr. Beltz is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pulmonary Medicine/Medical Intensive Care Unit and Infectious Diseases. She serves as a preceptor to residents in the  medical intensive care unit. Dr. Beltz received her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from Purdue University and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her areas of interest include sedation in ventilated patients, the use of neuromuscular blocking agents in the ICU setting, and treatment strategies for sepsis.

Roy 'Cam' Davis, Pharm.D.

Dr. Davis is a Clinical Pharmacist in Pediatrics and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  He serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students.  Dr. Davis received his B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas and Pharm.D. degree from Duquesne University.  His areas of interest include pediatrics and cardiology.

Michael E. Ernst, Pharm.D., BCPS

Dr. Ernst is an Associate Professor (Clinical) at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and precepts residents and PharmD students in the Family Medicine clinic. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and completed a Specialty Pharmacy Residency in Family Medicine at the University of Iowa. Dr. Ernst lectures on numerous pharmacotherapy topics to students in the College of Pharmacy. He has authored over 40 publications, and maintains active practice and interdisciplinary research interests in the areas of geriatrics, hypertension, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

Danielle Hess, Pharm.D.

Dr. Hess is a Clinical Pharmacist in the inpatient Psychiatry areas.  She serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students in this area.  Dr. Hess received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  Her areas of interest include schizophrenia and patient education.

Ryan Hobbs, R.Ph.

Mr. Hobbs is a Clinical Pharmacist in Cardiology. He serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in cardiology and cardiovascular intensive care. Mr. Hobbs received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His areas of interest include emergency and critical cardiac care and pharmacy and multidisciplinary process improvements to improve patient outcomes.

Darin Johnson, Pharm.D.

Dr. Johnson is a Clinical Pharmacist in adult hematology/oncology.  He serves as a preceptor to Pharm.D. students in hematology/oncology.  Dr. Johnson received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  He completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  He then received his Pharm.D. degree via post-bachelor program from the University of Iowa.  His areas of interest include hematology, oncology, and infectious diseases.

Sarah Johnson, Pharm.D.

Dr. Johnson is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) program.  Dr. Johnson serves as a preceptor to Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students for the MUE rotation.  She received her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her areas of interest include immunosuppression,  gastroenterology, and pharmacoeconomics, and outcomes research.

Jeffrey Killeen, Pharm.D.

Dr. Killeen is a Clinical Pharmacist in Cardiology and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  He serves as a preceptor for pharmacy practice residents and Pharm.D. students in cardiology and the cardiovascular intensive care unit.  Dr. Killeen received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  His areas of interest include cardiology, critical care, and infectious diseases.

Gwen Kirsch, Pharm.D.

Dr. Kirsch is a Clinical Pharmacist in Oncology.  She serves as a preceptor to Pharm.D. students in the area of general medicine/oncology.  Dr. Kirsch received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  Her areas of interest include critical care, oncology, and hematology.

Lee Kral, Pharm.D.,BCPS

Dr. Kral is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pain Management. Her practice includes both acute pain service and pain medicine clinic responsibilities. She serves as a preceptor for residents and Pharm.D. students in this area. Dr. Kral received her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees at the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In addition to her area of practice, her other interests include internal medicine, geriatrics, and the development of a computer-based medical record, electronic prescriptions and order entry.

Michelle Krummel, R.Ph.

Ms. Krummel is a Clinical Pharmacist in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies and Anticoagulation Clinic.  She serves as a preceptor to Pharmacy Practice Residents in the Anticoagulation Clinic.  She received her B.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  Her areas of interest are hyperlipidemia and patient education.

Joe Mac, Pharm.D.

Dr. Mac is a Clinical Pharmacist in the inpatient Psychiatry areas and serves a preceptor to Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students in this area. Dr. Mac received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and has practiced for 12 years, with 8 years in the area of psychiatry. He has practiced in the areas of geriatrics and internal medicine and currently has interests in schizophrenia and geriatric psychiatry.

Lisa A. Mascardo, Pharm.D.

Dr. Mascardo is the Assistant Director for Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care. She serves as a preceptor for residents on the Pharmacy Management rotation. She received her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. Her areas of interest include patient safety initiatives, quality improvement, pharmacy management and oncology.

Deanna McDanel, Pharm.D.,BCPS

Dr. McDanel is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Ambulatory Pharmaceutical Care.  Her primary practice sites include Internal Medicine, Anticoagulation, Pharmaceutical Case Management, and Allergy/Immunology Clinics.  She serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students.  She is also an Assistant Professor (Clinical) with the University of Iowa and teaches in various courses at the College of Pharmacy.  Dr. McDanel received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Iowa in 2001 and completed an ASHP-accredited Specialized Residency in Ambulatory Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2002.  In addition to her areas of practice, her interests include hypertension, osteoarthritis, and diabetes management.

Doug Morgan, M.S., R.Ph.

Mr. Morgan is a Clinical Pharmacist in Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care, and serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Mr. Morgan received his B.S. and M.S. (Hospital & Clinical Pharmacy) degrees from the University of Iowa, and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has practiced as a pharmacist for 25 years, with 19 years of experience in pediatric patient care. His areas of interest include pain management, sedation strategies, medication administration methods, and medication safety measures in pediatric intensive care.

Joan Murhammer, R.Ph.

Ms. Murhammer is a Clinical Pharmacist in the Drug Information Center. Ms. Murhammer received her B.S. degree from the University of Iowa and has completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She has practiced as a pharmacist for over 15 years, with 11 years of experience in her current position. She serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students for the Drug Information rotation and educates residents and students on answering drug information calls, literature evaluation, and on-line retrieval systems. Her areas of interest include pediatrics, immunizations, and dietary supplements.

Mike Murray, R.Ph.

Mr. Murray is a Clinical Pharmacist with the Internal Medicine Service and serves as a preceptor to Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students in this area. Mr. Murray received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. His areas of interest include diabetes management, patient education and the continuity of care between the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Steven P. Nelson, M.S.

Mr. Nelson is Senior Associate Director in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care.  He also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, the University of Iowa.  He received his B.S. in Pharmacy and M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy from North Dakota State University and completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.  His areas of interest include computer systems, automated dispensing systems, human resources management, medication safety, and quality improvement.

Erin Newkirk, Pharm.D.,BCPS

Dr. Newkirk is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care.  Her primary practice sites include Anticoagulation, Diabetes Management, Internal Medicine, and Pulmonary Clinics.  She is an Assistant Professor (Clinical), at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in her clinical areas.  Dr. Newkirk received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin and completed as ASHP-accredited Specialized Residency in Primary Care at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.  In addition to her areas of practice, her other interests include hyperlipidemia and hypertension.

Garret Newkirk, Pharm.D., M.S.

Dr. Newkirk is a Supervisor for the Acute Pharmaceutical Care Service.  He received his B.S., Pharm.D., and masters in Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He completed an ASHP-accredited specialized residency in Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.  His areas of interest include medication safety, biotechnology, outcomes research, and critical care.

Ellen Nickel, Pharm.D., BCPS

Dr. Nickel is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. She serves as a preceptor to residents in the areas of surgery, surgical intensive care and the operating room. Dr. Nickel received her B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin and her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Major areas of interest include sedation and pain management, the appropriate use of neuromuscular blockade, pharmacokinetics and nutrition support in the critically ill. Dr. Nickel has an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Anesthesia and serves as a pharmacy consultant to the Hyperbaric Medicine Service.

Beth Bryles Phillips, Pharm.D., BCPS

Dr. Phillips is the Program Director for the Ambulatory Care Specialized Residency.  She is also a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and Assistant Professor (Clinical) in Ambulatory Care.  Her practice sites include Internal Medicine/Pharmacotherapy, Geriatrics, and Anticoagulation Clinics. She serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in these areas.  She also lectures in various courses at the College of Pharmacy.  Dr. Phillips received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Kansas. She completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and an ASHP-accredited Specialized Residency in Ambulatory Care at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City  Her interests include lipid lowering therapy, NSAID-induced changes in blood pressure, and medication management capacity in geriatric patients.

Mary Ross, R.Ph., M.B.A.

Ms. Ross is the Assistant Director for the Drug Information, Medication Use Evaluation and Research Center. Ms. Ross received her B.S. degree from the University of Iowa and her M.B.A. degree from Eastern Michigan University. Her areas of interest include evaluating the utility of electronic/computerized drug information resources, disease state management, pharmacoeconomics, and the development of concurrent, interventional medication use evaluations that improve patient outcome.

Wendi Slaughter,Pharm.D..

Dr. Slaughter is a Supervisor for the Acute Pharmaceutical Care Service, including IV Admixture and Home Health Care. She received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Her areas of interest include oncology therapy, pediatrics and medication safety.

Mark Sorenson, R.Ph.

Mr. Sorenson is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pediatrics and serves as a preceptor to residents in the area of pediatrics. His clinical practice sites include the pediatric bone marrow transplantation unit and the pediatric hematology/oncology services. Mr. Sorenson received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His areas of interest include treatment of infectious diseases in immunocompromised children and therapy of pediatric oncology disorders. He is actively involved in the ChildrenŐs Oncology Group (COG) as the Chair of the Pharmacy Committee and a member of the Pharmacy, ALL, and Supportive Care Committees.

Susan Sorenson, R.Ph.

Ms. Sorenson is a Clinical Pharmacist in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. She serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students in the outpatient oncology setting.  Ms. Sorenson received her B.S. degree from the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her areas of interest include treatment of fever/neutropenia, antiemetic therapies, and pain management.

David Thomsen, R.Ph.

Mr. Thomsen is a Clinical Pharmacist in Solid Organ Transplantation. He serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students taking the surgery/solid organ transplantation rotation. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa. His interests include immunology, immunosuppressants, patient education, and latex allergy concerns.

Dave Weetman, R.Ph., M.S.

Mr. Weetman is Assistant Director of the Acute Pharmaceutical Care Service. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Iowa, completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and received his Masters in Business Administration degree from The Johns-Hopkins University. His areas of interest include continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient settings and medication safety.

Eric Whitaker, Pharm.D.

Dr. Whitaker is a Clinical Pharmacist in Solid Organ Transplant and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He serves as a preceptor for Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. students. He received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Iowa and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His areas of interest include patient education, critical care, and infectious diseases.

Shari Wood, R.Ph.

Ms. Wood is a Clinical Pharmacist in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. She serves as a preceptor to Pharmacy Practice Residents and Pharm.D. student externs on rotation in the outpatient oncology setting. Ms. Wood received her B.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Her areas of interest include patient education, anti-emetic concerns, and chemotherapy-related adverse reactions.
