Safety in the workplace is an important issue in any business. It is especially vital in health care where nurses are exposed to a variety of dangers. In fact, learning about new safety products is a priority for nurses at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Because they work with so many sharp objects, nurses have a dedicated safety program in place. A wide array of health care providers help identify the most effective equipment and safety practices available.
"It is a work hazard, and there are products out there that can help prevent many of our sharps injuries," said Renee Gould, UI Advanced Practice Nurse-Supervisor. "So making a safe working environment for the nurses is really my goal."
UI staff nurse James Conwell works with needles every day. He and his colleagues constantly share information about the latest safety products and procedures. Conwell says this learning environment would not be possible without support from leadership at UI Hospitals and Clinics.
"The products that are being demonstrated are costly and so is training staff to use these products," Conwell said. "So it is very important to have your hospital stand behind you."
New products are also designed with patient safety and satisfaction in mind.
