National Burn Awareness Week
It's National Burn Awareness Week - a chance to review some
common-sense safety tips to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
"
I guess I set the can right next to me. Then I bent down, lit it, and I
guess it got me or whatever. So I ran for about five,10 feet... stop,
drop and rolled," says Justin Hinton, former burn victim.
Remembering to 'stop, drop and roll' may have saved Justin's
life. His burns were severe, but surgeons at Children's Hospital
of Iowa repaired the damage.
Since then, the burns have healed. But Justin says the experience taught
him a valuable lesson about the dangers of fire. Specialists at the Burn
Treatment Center
at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics hope others learn from Justin's
story.
"
Most of the burns we see, when you look back, could be considered preventable.
Meaning, it was something that was done out of haste or out of not paying
attention," says Lee Faucher, M.D., UI Health Care surgeon.
Other ways to avoid serious burns include regularly checking your smoke
detectors, turning down your hot water heater to 120-degrees to avoid
scalding, and keeping your kitchen safe for children to avoid oven
and stove burns. |
