Eastern Iowa young people are making a difference in their community through
a popular program at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The junior volunteer program
at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics places Eastern Iowa young
men and women into a unique environment – one filled opportunities
to learn and serve.
Emily Joynt of Iowa City has a greater appreciation for the health
care profession. Emily learns more and more every day as a junior volunteer
at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. On this day, Emily is serving
patients and staff at the Rooftop Café.
Emily and other junior volunteers attend hospital orientation and serve
in various units and departments within the hospital. Volunteering here
gives these students a wide variety of experiences they can’t get
anywhere else.
"It can be hard sometimes for a student to imagine all the different things
that our patients go through. It really does help them to see things from
another’s point of view," says Jean Reed, Volunteer Services
assistant director.
For Emily, volunteering comes down to helping people who might not
be expecting it.
"Everywhere I went, it was always a new experience, something different
was happening," says Emily. "It was just amazing the amount
of organization that has to go into running a hospital, and it was nice
to
get a behind-the-scenes look at that."
Junior volunteers also attend career seminars, learning more about
the wide variety of opportunities in health care.
The junior volunteer program runs eight weeks during the summer. Applications
are available now through April 30. For more information, call 319-356-2515
or visit the junior
volunteer site.
