People in the tri-state area will hear something different this week when they tune into Y105 FM, a popular radio station in Dubuque. The morning DJs, Chris Farber and Rachel Redford, will put aside their usual zaniness to host a Radiothon from Tuesday through Saturday to benefit University of Iowa Children's Hospital at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
"In radio, very rarely do you get to touch so many people in such a positive way," Farber said. "Although we get to entertain people on a daily basis, this is a unique opportunity for us."
Listeners pledged more than $40 thousand during last years five-day Radiothon at Kennedy mall. Farber and Redford say its the incredible stories of survival that keep them going, and one particularly memorable story involved Dubuque resident Kendall Doerr. Doerr was diagnosed with Kawasaki diseasea potentially deadly heart condition. She received specialized treatment at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
"I just kept thinking, that could be my son one day, that could be my son one day. I really need to do something to help these kids," Redford said. "Kids are our future, so if we can keep the future going and brighten a kids day so they have a better tomorrow, thats just really what drove me. I love kids."
Childrens Miracle Network partners with 135 radio stations nationwide to help support critically ill and injured children. Locally, Children's Miracle Network has raised more than $16-million, all of which stays at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
