Community living options

Many people worry that they will not be able to live alone as they get older. Or, they may not want to live alone. The good news is that there are many options to meet each person's needs. When making a choice, consider your ability to carry out activities of daily living, income, family and other support networks, transportation, community preference, and future plans.

  • Choices available for people who are completely independent include:
  • sharing a home or apartment with family or friends
  • retirement community with leisure facilities and community centers and
  • apartments with services, such as transportation, meals, and housekeeping

For someone needing some help with meals, want shared expenses, or just want some company, the following are options:

  • group homes
  • foster care homes
  • shared housing or
  • government sponsored housing

For more help with personal care and activities of daily living, the choices include:

  • assisted living facilities and
  • personal care homes

Continuing care retirement communities are more expensive, but provide all of the above options that are available to the older adult as their needs change. All living options should be evaluated based on the specific needs of the individual so a safe and comfortable living environment is chosen.
