Healthy behaviors for seniors

It's not too late to improve your health at any age. A change in unhealthy behaviors may be required.

Self-care tips to get healthy and stay healthy:

  • Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. Always ask your healthcare provider about any exercise plans you may have, especially if you have a medical condition.
  • Eat low-fat, high-fiber foods.
  • Get most of your calories from carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, and whole grain, high fiber breads, pastas, and cereals.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, if approved by your physician.
  • Take vitamin and mineral supplements designed for seniors. Always ask your healthcare provider or your pharmacist about the use of these supplements.
  • Get regular medical and dental checkups.
  • Socialize with friends and family.
  • Enjoy a healthy love life.
  • Put on sunscreen and wear sunglasses when you are outside.
  • Limit your alcoholic beverages to no more than one or two drinks a day.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Keep busy, try new things, and enjoy yourself.

Many older adults use the retirement years to learn how to do something they have always wanted to do, but never had the time. Volunteer work and traveling are also wonderful ways to stay alert, happy, and healthy.
