Impotence in older men

Most men will have problems getting or maintaining an erection at some time in their life. This becomes more likely as a man gets older. You may hear it referred to as erectile dysfunction or impotence. The good news is that there are treatments available.

There are many possible physical and non-physical causes of impotence. Older men are more likely to experience impotence.

Possible causes of impotence include:

  • eating or drinking too much
  • being very tired
  • diabetes
  • diseases or injuries of the nervous system
  • alcohol and drug abuse
  • depression, stress, or anxiety

Many medicines can cause impotence. Some of the most common medications causing this side effect are those used to treat:

  • high blood pressure
  • depression
  • psychosis
  • anxiety
  • allergies
  • ulcer disease and
  • epilepsy

If you have sexual problems soon after starting a new medication, you should contact your healthcare provider. Speak with your provider before changing the dose or stopping any prescription medication you may be taking.

Physical causes are found to be at least a contributing factor in many patients. Psychological causes may be less likely to cause impotence if you have always felt comfortable with your sexual performance. While it may take longer to get an erection, older men are usually able to maintain an erection. Most older men need more direct physical stimulation to get an erection. This is normal and is something you should let your sexual partner know.

Impotence can be caused by a combination of any of the various causes, including the physical and psychological causes. If you have any concerns, it is a good idea to get a medical exam. Your provider will identify the cause of your symptoms. If the problem is physical, there are many treatments that can help, including medications and implants. If you suffer from impotence, the first step is to seek help.
