Self-esteem in older adultsSelf-esteem is the term used to describe how one feels about one's self. It is based on feelings of being valued, useful, and competent. Changes in roles, activities, and lifestyles that often occur with aging may cause a change in self-esteem. Most people feel some loss of control as they age. Some of this depends on factors that cannot be controlled. Appearance will change. Reaction times slow down. The senses, such as hearing or vision, may change. However, there are other areas of your life you can control, by staying as independent as possible and by acting in ways that encourage other people to respect you. Take control of your health. Eat a healthy diet. Exercise daily, and visit your primary healthcare provider and your dentist regularly. Take your medications as prescribed, and learn more about how to deal with any medical conditions you have. It is easier for people, including your family, to respect your judgment if they see you taking good care of yourself. Make sure you talk to your primary healthcare provider about your medical concerns. Ask about books you can read and places to get information. Take control of your time. Be as active as your physical condition permits. Think about what it is that you do well and that you can share with someone else. Look into taking classes that keep you moving. Physical activity can help with a variety of medical problems and can enhance a person's self-esteem. Take control of your relationships and your social life. Get active in a church, a social group, or a club. Find out what your local senior center has to offer. It may be more than a loss of self-esteem if the person experiences a change in sleep or eating habits, and a loss of appetite, loss of interest in usual activities, crying more than usual, and having feelings of hopelessness or helplessness. These may be signs of depression and require evaluation by a provider. Older adults who feel happy and in control of their lives often have higher self-esteem than the young or the middle-aged.
