Luque Segmental InstrumentationScoliosis is an abnormal curvature in the back. It usually occurs during late childhood and adolescence. Treatment can vary depending on the severity. In severe cases, in which surgery is required, a procedure called a Luque segmental instrumentation may be performed. Luque segmental instrumentation uses a device called L-rods. These L-rods are bent to look like natural curves of a healthy back. They are also very strong. Surgery involves placing these rods along the bones in the back; wires connecting the rods go into the spinal canal. Most people who have this surgery are in the hospital for about one week. Once discharged, they are instructed to limit their activity for several months. Complete healing takes one to two years. A brace is usually not required during the healing process.
