Bone infections are treated with rest and antibiotics given into the veins. After a while, the antibiotics may be changed to ones that can be taken by mouth. Antibiotics will need to be taken for several weeks or several months. Often bone infections can be treated at home. Sometimes it may be necessary for the person to start treatment in the hospital. Occasionally, surgery is used to clean out the area where the infection occurs. The healthcare provider should be contacted whenever there is bone pain or tenderness.
