Breast enlargement or reduction

Breast enlargement (or augmentation) is an option for women with underdeveloped breasts or women who experience a decrease in breast size or shape due to pregnancy or weight loss. Enlargement consists of lifting the breast tissue and placing a natural-feeling implant material underneath.

Implants made of a silicone shell and filled with saline are most often used. There are a variety of implant designs. The choice of the implant, reasons for selection, and size changes are discussed with the plastic surgeon. There are several methods used for placement of the implants. All methods are designed to reduce scaring and will be explained by the surgeon.

Breast reduction involves removal of excess breast tissue and skin and reshaping of the breasts. Oversized breasts can cause back, neck, breast, and shoulder pain, and limit physical activities. Many women with oversized breasts experience physical and psychological problems. For this reason, some choose to have breast reduction surgery. Always select a board certified plastic surgeon with training and experience in breast reduction surgery to discuss and assist in choosing the right procedure for the reduction.

Breast surgery procedures used are designed to minimize scarring. After the surgery, a surgical dressing protects the incisions. Some swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort is easily controlled with prescription pain medication. Breast surgery may be covered by your insurance plan and can be performed on an outpatient basis in an outpatient surgery center or in a hospital. General or local anesthesia may be used.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications that can occur. Before agreeing to surgery, find out as much as possible about the surgical procedure, the risks involved, and the plastic surgeon you may be considering.
