Beating fatigue quizHow much do you know about beating fatigue? Try taking the following true-or-false quiz. You may be surprised at how much you know. #1. Fatigue is always physical. False. In fact, fatigue has several causes. Fatigue is physical or mental weariness that can be caused by mental stress, physical disease, lack of sleep, or worry. If you are feeling fatigued, try to sort out what may be causing it. Have you recently had excessive stress at work? Are you having fever and chills? Do you have a new baby and never get to sleep through the night? When you see your healthcare provider, ask about feelings of fatigue. He or she can ask many questions to help diagnose the cause. #2. Enough sleep can help prevent fatigue. True. Enough sleep is crucial in preventing fatigue. What is enough sleep? Sleep needs are individual. Most people require between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every day to not feel fatigued. If you do shift work, or if your sleep pattern is regularly interrupted, you may need more sleep to help prevent fatigue. #3. Exercise and diet have no impact on fatigue. False. In fact, other than sleeping regularly, exercise and diet may have the most impact on your feelings of fatigue. Eat a balanced diet. Make sure you get all of the required vitamins and minerals. Low B-12 and low iron can cause fatigue. Moderate exercise, even when you are tired, can decrease feelings of fatigue. #4. If I am always tired, I must have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. False. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome involves multiple symptoms, such as excessive fatigue, generalized pain, concentration problems, low- grade fevers, and immune changes. You need to see your healthcare provider to determine if you have this condition, and how best to treat it if you do. Only a physician can make this diagnosis.
