Caffeine quiz

How much do you know about caffeine? Try taking the following true- or-false quiz. You may be surprised at how much you know.

#1. Caffeine is a stimulant.

True. As a stimulant, too much caffeine can have many side effects. Excessive intake can cause nervousness (that "jittery" feeling), anxiety, irritability, headaches, abdominal distress, insomnia, heart irregularities, and difficulty sleeping. In moderation, caffeine is a mild stimulant that increases urination and the heart's rate.

#2. Decaffeinated coffee and teas have no caffeine whatsoever.

False is the right answer. Even though these drinks should have no caffeine, most contain at least a small amount. This is due to the difficult process required to produce decaffeinated drinks. Usually the small amount present in any of these items will not cause any side effects.

#3. Some clear sodas, such as Mountain Dew, contain more caffeine than a cup of coffee.

True. Some soft drinks have a large amount of added caffeine. Caffeine is present in most soft drinks. Soft drinks that do not have caffeine are usually labeled caffeine free.

#4. Caffeine withdrawal can result in flu-like symptoms, as well as headaches.

True. Caffeine withdrawal can be bothersome, although it is not life threatening. Many people report symptoms if they miss their morning cup of coffee, or attempt to stop drinking caffeine. Withdrawal symptoms include flu-like symptoms, as well as, fatigue, headaches, and irritability. The headaches can be strong, and last for anywhere from a few days to weeks. The flu-like symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Weaning yourself slowly will help to avoid these symptoms.

#5. Substances that do not contain caffeine cannot be stimulants.

False. Stimulants can be found in foods, beverages, and certain medications. Many stimulant drugs have legitimate medical purposes, and others are used illegally for their energizing effects.
