How much do you know about sleep disorders? Try taking the following true-or-false-quiz. You may be surprised at how much you know.

#1 Sleep disorders can be evaluated and treated.

True. Sleep disorders can be evaluated in a laboratory or by in- home sleep monitors. There are many different types of sleep disorders and some may result in serious medical problems. Treatments for sleep disorders include breathing oxygen while sleeping, taking medications, changing sleep or work patterns, or possibly having surgery.

#2. Snoring is a sleep disorder.

True. Snoring can cause many problems, not the least of which is stress for the person sleeping with you. Snoring can reflect underlying medical problems. If you feel that your snoring is a problem, see your healthcare provider.

#3. Narcolepsy means a person is addicted to narcotics.

False. Narcolepsy is a serious sleep disorder characterized by sudden and uncontrollable attacks of deep sleep. People with narcolepsy must take extreme care with driving, operating machinery, and water sports.

#4. Sleep apnea is associated with snoring.

True. The word apnea means "without breath" for a period of time. Sleep apnea is associated with frequent snoring, followed by a few seconds of non-breathing, and then awakening. While sleeping, episodes occur when the respiratory muscles stop working for a few seconds. Sleep apnea is a problem that needs proper evaluation and treatment.

#5. If you are having trouble falling asleep, you should ask your provider for sleeping pills.

False. There are many things you can do to help fall asleep. Avoid caffeine, exercise every day in the morning, try warm baths, or warm milk before bed. Do not watch TV or do work in bed. Try soft music or meditation before sleep. If none of these work and you have not been able to sleep soundly for more than a few days, seek medical care. Your provider may be able to determine why you are not sleeping and provide some help.
