Healthy pregnancy quiz

How much do you know about having a healthy pregnancy? Try taking the following true-or-false quiz. You may be surprised at how much you know.

#1. You should wait until you are 12 weeks pregnant before you see your doctor.

False. Make an appointment to see your healthcare provider as soon as you suspect you might be pregnant. An early examination helps avoid problems later. Current guidelines recommend early prenatal care, starting at around 6 weeks.

#2. Many women feel nauseated and vomit in early pregnancy.

True. You are not alone, and you may feel scared and tired during this time, too. Many women have nearly constant nausea throughout the first 12 weeks, with some women having symptoms for even a few weeks longer. Try to figure out what makes you feel better. Many women do better with small sips of carbonated clear sodas and saltine crackers.

#3. Moms usually feel their babies move by 18 weeks.

True. Most first-time moms feel baby movement between 16 and 18 weeks. Moms who have been pregnant before usually feel movement between 12 and 14 weeks because they know what to expect.

#4. You should only gain 15 pounds during your pregnancy.

False. A weight gain between 25 and 40 pounds is common for healthy women. Women who are underweight should gain more, and women who are overweight can gain less. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are worried about your weight gain.

#5. You should be screened for diabetes while you are pregnant.

True. All pregnant women should be screened for diabetes. This screening will review your risk for getting diabetes. Women with the following risk factors should receive additional blood tests to test for diabetes: over 25 years of age; obesity; history of diabetes or diabetes with previous pregnancies; delivery of large babies; family history of diabetes; African American, American Indian, Hispanic, South of East Asia; or Pacific Island ancestry.
