HIV/AIDS: Information and ReferralHIV and AIDS have been recognized for less than 20 years. Fortunately, there are many resources available to the public that provide information about these devastating illnesses. The National AIDS 24-hour Hotline at (800) 342-2437 answers questions related to AIDS. Spanish speakers can call (800) 344-7432 between 8:00 am and 2:00 am eastern time 7 days a week. The TTY line for the hearing impaired is 800-243-7889. These hotlines are sponsored through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Besides answering your questions, they provide free booklets and information about HIV and AIDS. For information on new drug testing, call the National Institute of Health AIDS Clinical Trials Service at (800) 874-2572. Public and university libraries have HIV and AIDS information. The Internet is also an excellent resource. Many of the journals dealing with HIV and AIDS are primarily aimed at healthcare providers. A popular magazine called POZ has stories by and about people living with HIV. For more information about subscribing to POZ, call (800) 973-2376. Many cities have AIDS service organizations and healthcare providers that are listed in the Yellow Pages under "AIDS Information and Treatment."
