Cancer Prevention: Part 2

Cancer Prevention Tips: March 2006

Many Americans feel they can do nothing to prevent cancer. In fact, a new American Cancer Society national survey found that 47 percent of adult Americans think they have little or no ability to reduce their cancer risk.* However, there are steps you can take to reduce your cancer risk. Suggestions include:

Breast Cancer

  • Follow a low-fat diet
  • Exercise 30-60 minutes a day
  • Limit alcohol consumption to no more than 1 drink per day, if at all
  • Consider taking Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (tamoxifen or raloxifene if you are over 55
  • Breast feed for at least one year over all pregnancies

Prostate Cancer

  • Consider hormonal drugs that have shown promise in preventing prostate cancer (finasteride)
  • Follow a low animal fat diet
  • Ask your doctor about chemoprevention with vitamin E, selenium and lycopene

Colon Cancer

  • Ask your doctor about regular daily use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, Sulindac)
  • Follow a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, low in red meat
  • Take calcium supplements
  • Exercise 30-60 minutes a day
  • Include foods containing vitamins D, E, and Folic Acid in your diet regularly
  • Take a multivitamin every day
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Have colon screening and removal of benign polyps which can become cancerous
  • Take birth control pills for at least 5 years

Skin Cancer

  • Use and reapply sunscreen according to the package instructions
  • Wear protective clothing with close weave when outdoors
  • Wear sunglasses with ultraviolet protective lenses
  • Stay in the shade when at all possible while outdoors
  • Avoid reflective surfaces
  • Avoid artificial sources of Ultraviolet light such as sun lamps and tanning beds
  • Block Ultraviolet A rays when traveling by car, bus, truck, etc.
