Neutropenia or low white blood count is a decreased number of neutrophils. Neutrophils are a subset of mature white blood cells that fight bacterial infections. Neutrophils are sometimes called "Segs" or segmented neutrophils. If the neutrophil count is less than 500, the person is at increased risk for infection.
The normal white blood count ranges from 3,700 to 10,500. Normal neutrophils run from 2,188 to 7,800. This range can be affected by medications, radiation treatment strenuous exercise, stress and other diseases, such as infection.
