Low White Blood Counts (Neutropenia)

Who gets low white blood cell counts?

For persons being treated for cancer the usual reason a white count is low is because of either chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Chemotherapy and radiation destroy cells that grow at a fast rate. White blood cells are one of these types of cells.

Other reasons for a white blood cell count are viral infection, a toxic reaction to a chemical or substance, or another problem in the bone marrow that does not allow the bone marrow to make more new white cells.
