Cancer Prevention: What You Need To Know Cancer Information Service (CIS)Peer Review Status: Internally Reviewed by Cancer Center StaffCreation Date: 1996 Last Revision Date: April 2001 Cancer Information Service: Your Cancer Resource The Cancer Information Service is a confidential service, providing understandable, accurate and timely information about all aspects of cancer. Patients, family members, the general public and health professionals are encouraged to contact the Service at the nationwide toll-free number, 1-800-237-1225 or e-mail: cancer-information@uiowa.edu. Information Specialists will personally answer your questions using state-of-the art information. The Service is an educational outreach program of the Holden Cancer Center, a part of University of Iowa Health Care. The Cancer Information Service, established in January of 1987, has grown to a nationwide service providing information on cancer prevention, risk factors, symptoms, early detection, cancer sites, treatment and coping. The Cancer Information Service staff do not make medical recommendations but respond to general questions about cancer. In addition to serving the general public, the Cancer Information Service staff serve as a resource for health care professionals as they seek information about state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures, treatment options and clinical studies. The Service staff research topics and provide a detailed response to questions about cancer using medical literature, the National Cancer Institutes Physician Data Query database, and other national databases. You can request information from the Cancer Information Service by calling the toll-free number 1-800-237-1225, sending e-mail to cancer-information@uiowa.edu, or visiting the office in the John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The Service staff will answer your questions and/or provide free written material from a variety of national organizations, including the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the American Brain Tumor Association, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Skin Cancer Foundation. Information is available on all cancer sites. Cancer Information Service staff are available 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
