Stroke and Brain Attack

Protocol for Transferring Patients
with Acute Ischemic Stroke to
UI Hospitals and Clinics that are
Candidates for, or Who Have Received rtPA

  • Referring Physician will input the patient data and initiate the videoconference OR contact the senior Neurology Resident on call or contact the PCRC at 1-800-322-8442.
  • Neurology Resident will ascertain:
    • Name, Age, Sex of Patient
    • Time of Onset of Symptoms
    • Reason for Transfer (for rtPA, complication, or monitoring after rtPA)
    • Status of lab work (CBC, PT, PTT, Glucose, EKG) and Head CT Scan and, if completed, ask referring physician to send with the patient or, if in progress, ask referring physician to FAX lab results as soon as possible.
    • Estimated Time of Arrival, if transferred by land or AirCare.
    • If patient appears eligible, Check (any may rule out rtPA):
      • Recent Surgery (<14 days previous)
      • Head Trauma or Stroke (<3 months previous)
      • Acute MI, GI or GU bleeding (within 21 days)
    • Location and Method of Contacting Next of Kin
  • If patient appears eligible, Neurology Resident on call should:
    • Initiate transfer
    • Call ER to initiate orders there
    • Call CT technician
    • Call Stroke Attending Physician
