To Parents of Children Born with Clubfeet

Clewell Family

Ignacio Ponseti, MD
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Our family's experience with Dr. Ponseti's non-surgical method of treating clubfeet began with Mary Beth as a child in the early 1960's. Treatment at that time was very successful, and she has had not foot problems as an adult.

When our daughter was born in 1989, she was born clubfooted. When she was 2 days old, she was treated by Orthopaedic doctors in our hometown with a casting method. We then decided to be referred to Dr. Ponseti in Iowa City were he continued with the casting and the Denise Brown splint to wear during naps and night time until she was, I believe, three years old. Her treatment has been successful and her feet are as normal as any 11 year old girl.

In 1997 our third child, a boy, was also born with clubfeet. We didn't hesitate in taking him to Dr. Ponseti for treatment. He was put in casts for about four months and then began wearing, and currently continues to wear, the Denise Brown splint during naps and night time. For a third time this non-surgical method of treatment for clubfeet has been a success.

Our experiences have been very positive in this non-surgical type of treatment. Neither of the children ever experienced any pain or discomfort with either the casting or wearing the splint. They learned to crawl and even could pull themselves up wearing the casts. They treat putting the splint on at naps and at nighttime as part of their normal sleeping habit.
