To Parents of Children Born with Clubfeet

Christopher's Story

Ignacio Ponseti, MD
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Five years ago, my son Christopher was born at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with a right clubfoot. Dr. Ponseti treated him first with casts. He had five casts in all. When the last cast was removed, he was fitted with a brace that he wore full time for 3 months, and then for twelve hours every night thereafter. This went on for three years.

Christopher tolerated the casts and brace extremely well. The braces were adjusted frequently as he grew, so we never had a problem with his compliance in wearing them. In fact, Christopher insisted on wearing the brace regardless if we were on vacation or had a baby sitter for the evening.

Christopher enjoys all the typical activities of a five year old: running, jumping, bike riding, etc. He has also participated in gymnastics, swimming and is currently on a soccer team with his fellow kindergartners.
