Postural Kyphosis

  • Roundness disappears when standing straight
  • Smooth, gentle curve when bending over
  • Normal X-rays
  • Usually not painful
  • Normal hamstring muscles
  • Normal balance

Scheuermann's Kyphosis

  • Roundness does not disappear when standing straight
  • Roundness worsens when bending over
  • Back pain & fatigue
  • Tight hamstring muscles
  • Usually normal neurologically (nervous system)
  • Loss of balance
  • Can decrease lung and heart functions, due to less room in the chest cavity
