Postural Kyphosis

  • Education in proper sitting & standing
  • Exercise program to strengthen scapula & spine muscles

Scheuermann's Kyphosis

  • Medication to relieve pain
  • Exercises to strengthen scapula, spine & pelvic muscles
  • Stretches for back & hamstring

Curve < 50 degrees in the immature patient

  • Brace or cast to attempt to stop progression of curve during growth & help with pain

Curve 50-70 degrees in the immature patient

  • Brace for 1 yr round the clock, then at night for 2 yrs
  • Milwaukee brace for thoracic curves

Progressive Curve >60 degrees in the immature patient

  • Milwaukee brace even with no pain

Surgery Indications

  • Thoracic kyphosis > 75 degrees
  • Rigid kyphosis > 55 degrees
  • Persistent back pain
