What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis (ki-fO-sis)

  • Abnormal curvature of the thoracic spine (vertebrae in rib area)
  • Abnormal curve is > 40 degrees, resulting in a rounded or hunched-over posture
    (Normal curve is 20-40 degrees)
  • Postural kyphosis is more common in girls than boys

Types

  • Postural
  • Scheuermann's

Causes

  • Poor Posture
  • Unknown (possible hereditary)
  • Birth defects
  • Osteoporosis (later in life)
  • Congenital Disease
  • Injury (fractures)
