Jamie Vanourny: 11 years after surgeryPeer Review Status: Internally Peer ReviewedCreation Date: June 2002 Last Revision Date: June 2002
After my surgery, the pain quickly subsided. In fact, I was amazed at how fast the pain diminished. Within a few months, I was able to ride my bike and participate in many other activities. After eight months, I was released from all physical restrictions, such as engaging in contact sports. Since then, I continue to dance, play sports, and participate in all sorts of activities. I have not had any pain, complications, or need for a follow-up surgery. Having scoliosis and writing this book has had a profound impact on my life. By sharing my story over the last eleven years, I have communicated with thousands of people from every corner of the world. Children, adults, parents, teachers, doctors, and loved ones write to share their story, ask questions, talk with someone who has been through the procedure, and sometimes, write just to say thanks for letting them know they are not alone. Three years after my surgery, my younger brother, Chad, found out he had scoliosis. He too had surgery to correct his scoliosis, and is also doing great. Chad has not had any problems since his surgery and has participated in many sports and activities growing up, including running a marathon. Chad just graduated from The University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and a Minor in Psychology. He will be attending the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in the fall of 2002. Since having my surgery in seventh grade, I completed high school and attended the University of Iowa for college. I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Organizations and a Minor in Spanish. I currently am attending Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, and have just completed my second year of law school. I will graduate from law school in 2003. For those interested in learning more about scoliosis, I have learned that talking to others who have been through this experience seems to be the best way to gather information, trade stories, and help in easing fears. Additionally, the Internet has a plethora of sites designed for those interested in learning about or discussing scoliosis. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story. I sincerely hope this book will continue to help those who are now where I once was as well as the many others who are interested in learning more about scoliosis. Cordially yours, Jamie |
