Equipment:

  • Alcohol swab
  • Blood specimen tubes
  • 5 cc syringes (2)
  • Syringes with 3 cc (10 u/cc) preservative heparin for flushing (2)
  • Syringe with 3 cc normal saline
  • Sterile luerlock catheter cap (2)
  • Sterile 4 x 4
  • Tape

Procedure:

1. Wash hands.

BMT

2. Assemble equipment.

3. Clean catheter connection with alcohol swab.

4. Clamp both catheters and remove old cap.

5. Attach 5 cc syringe. Release clamp. Draw out 3 cc blood. Clamp catheter. Discard syringe with blood.
6. Attach 5 cc syringe. Release clamp. Draw out amount of blood needed for lab specimen. Clamp catheter.

BMT

7. Attach syringe with normal saline and instill. Clamp catheter.

8. Attach syringe with heparin and instill, clamping catheter as last of 3 cc is instilled.

BMT

9. Remove syringe and wipe catheter with alcohol swab.

10. Attach new cap.

BMT

11. Tape catheter cap in place.
12. Flush other port with heparin (Steps 8-11).
