Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant: A Guide for Families

Equipment:
- Alcohol swab
- Blood specimen tubes
- 5 cc syringes (2)
- Syringes with 3 cc (10 u/cc) preservative heparin for flushing (2)
- Syringe with 3 cc normal saline
- Sterile luerlock catheter cap (2)
- Sterile 4 x 4
- Tape
Procedure:
1. Wash hands.

2. Assemble equipment.
|
|
3. Clean catheter connection with alcohol swab.
|
|
|
4. Clamp both catheters and remove old cap.
|
|
5. Attach 5 cc syringe. Release clamp. Draw out 3 cc
blood. Clamp catheter. Discard syringe with blood.
6. Attach 5 cc syringe. Release clamp. Draw out amount of
blood needed for lab specimen. Clamp catheter.

7. Attach syringe with normal saline and instill. Clamp
catheter.
|
|
8. Attach syringe with heparin and instill, clamping
catheter as last of 3 cc is instilled.
|
|
|
9. Remove syringe and wipe catheter with alcohol swab.
|
|
|
10. Attach new cap.
|
|
|
11. Tape catheter cap in place.
12. Flush other port with heparin (Steps 8-11).
