Heparin Flush For Central Line Catheters [Home] - PBMT

Equipment:

  • 2-3 cc luerlock syringe with needle
  • Preservative heparin (10 u/cc)
  • Luerlock catheter plug (2)
  • Alcohol pads
  • Tape

Procedure:

1. Wash hands and assemble equipment on clean surface.

2. Take cap off of heparin vial and clean with alcohol swab.

3. Place needle on syringe and pull plunger back to 3 cc mark.
4. Maintaining sterility, remove the cap from the needle and insert it into the rubber top of the heparin vial.

5. Inject 3 cc of air into the vial.
6. Holding onto the syringe, turn the vial upside down.
7. Make certain your needle is below the fluid level and slowly pull back on the plunger until you have 3 cc of heparin in the syringe.

8. Remove the syringe from the vial.
9. Remove air from syringe. (Use your finger or a pencil to flick the syringe if necessary to move all tiny air bubbles to the top).
10. Replace the sterile cap over the needle.
11. Clamp the catheter.

12. Remove tape and cleanse connection with alcohol pad.

13. Remove catheter plug and attach syringe with heparin.
14. Open clamp and instill heparin, applying clamp as last of 3 cc's is instilled.

15. Keep catheter clamped.
16. Remove syringe.

17. Apply a new catheter plug.

18. Tape cap connection.
19. Repeat for other port.
