Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant: A Guide for Families

Low Fiber, Low Residue Diet

Geri Quinn, RN, MSN and Janine Petitgout, RN, MA
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Description
The low fiber, low residue diet provides food that will result in a reduced amount of fecal material in the lower bowel, and produce only a moderate amount of intestinal residue. This diet is designed for the patient receiving radiation therapy on or near the intestines or for the patient with partial bowel obstruction.

The following suggestions are made for each of the four food groups. Tender meat or meat made tender in the cooking process is used to decrease the amount of connective tissue. Nuts and legumes should be avoided. Refined breads and cereals which contain little fiber are recommended, but some patients will be able to tolerate whole grains. It is suggested that patients choose two fruits and two vegetables, thus meeting the basic four recommendations for this food group. Paring fruits and vegetables will reduce the fiber content. Fruits and vegetables which have traditionally been well tolerated are noted.

Adequacy
This diet meets the Recommended Dietary Allowances for all nutrients except iron for women of childbearing age.
