Minimum Residue Diet

Geri Quinn, RN, MSN and Janine Petitgout, RN, MA
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

This diet supplies food that will provide more complete nourishment than the clear liquid diet while producing a minimal of fecal residue in the lower bowel. This diet may be used for patients before and after abdominal surgery. It may be used as a transitional diet between the clear liquid and soft diets. To reduce indigestible carbohydrate to a minimum, all fruits and vegetables are omitted except strained fruit juice and tomato juice. Eggs, tender meat, or meat made tender in the cooking process are used. Milk as a beverage is not allowed.
