Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant: A Guide for Families
Administration of Medications Via an "Intermate" Delivery System

Equipment:
- 'Intermate' bottle
- Alcohol swabs
- 3 cc syringes with needles (3)
- Sterile luerlock catheter cap
- Tape
- Preservative Heparin (10 u/cc)
- Normal saline

Precautions:
'Intermate' bottle should not be used if any of the following are present:
- If there are any obvious cracks, leakage or dampness on outside of bottle
when removed from delivery bag.
- If bottle has not been maintained at correct temperature (i.e., refrigerated
if needed).
- If there are any questions about correctness of bottle label or contents.
Procedure:
1. Wash hands.

2. Assemble equipment.
3. Check 'Intermate' bottle and tubing for leaks, cracks, correct drug
name and dose.
4. Make sure the tubing is flushed with fluid.
5. Clamp catheter.

6. Remove tape from end of catheter, cleanse end with alcohol swab and
remove catheter cap.

|
7. Attach 3 cc syringe with normal saline, release clamp, flush catheter
with normal saline, and reapply catheter clamp.

8. Connect 'Intermate' tubing to catheter end and tape connection site.
|
|
|
9. Release clamp on both catheter and 'Intermate' tubing.
|
Infusion is complete when balloon is deflated and appears straight up and
down within the 'Intermate'.
- Clamp catheter, remove tape, and cleanse connection site with alcohol swab.
- Remove 'Intermate' tubing, attach 3 cc syringe with normal saline and flush
catheter.
- Clamp catheter.
- Perform routine heparin flush of catheter.
