Esophagus

Warren Bishop, MD
The University of Iowa Department of Pediatrics

My esophagus is my swallowing tube. It has muscles that squeeze from top to bottom to move food into my stomach. Because of these muscles, my esophagus lets me swallow when I am hanging upside down or even if I am weightless in space...

What does my esophagus look like on the inside? It is a smooth, slippery tube with a shiny, pink lining. If I swallow to much air or drink too much pop, it can let the air come back up!
