Returning home can be a very exciting event after a child has been in the hospital for a long time. As a parent, you should remember, however, that there is going to be a time of readjustment, especially if your child has been in the hospital a long time.

It is not uncommon for children may feel they need a lot of Mom's and Dad's time and attention. Sometimes, especially if there are brothers and sisters, your time must be divided among your children.

Returning to school and seeing their friends for the first time since the accident may be a bit scary. Once your childŐs doctor gives the OK, there is no reason your child cannot return to their regular activities. One thing to remember is that it will take some time for your child's energy to return. Exercises are important for your child to do, but he/she may need more rest periods than before.

Depending on where your child was burned, he/she may look different from his/her friends. The friends will probably be curious about where your child has been and what has happened.

If you are interested in having members of the UI Burn Treatment Center staff speak to your childŐs class to answer questions and concerns they might have, arrangements can be made by talking to your nurse, Child Life Specialist or social worker.

If things seem to really get your child down, and it can happen, mention it at your next clinic visit or contact your local physician. They will be able to assist in finding the right resources to help your child.
