AntibioticsAntibiotics are medications used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Many common infections, especially colds and other upper respiratory infections, are caused by viruses. These infections are not treated with antibiotics! Antibiotics are very safe and effective if taken correctly. Make sure you tell your provider and pharmacist what medications you are allergic to, and what side effects you have had in the past. Follow these guidelines to ensure proper and safe treatment:
There are many different types of antibiotics with different types of side effects. The most common side effects are upset stomach, diarrhea, and skin rashes. If you develop an upset stomach or diarrhea, ask your pharmacist if you can take the antibiotic with food. If you develop diarrhea or a skin rash, call your healthcare provider. If you do develop a side effect, do not just stop taking the antibiotic. Call your provider to see what other options may be available to treat your infection.
