Mental health professionalsThere are many types of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and counselors. If you are not satisfied with your first mental health professional, do not give up on counseling or therapy. Try someone else. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with either a degree as an M.D. (a Doctor of Medicine) or a degree as a D.O. (a Doctor of Osteopathy). He or she attends medical school and then has specialized training in mental health for years after their internship. All psychiatrists are trained in the medical aspects of mental health. They are able to prescribe medications and provide psychotherapy. Sometimes you may see a psychiatrist for medications and another mental health professional for counseling or therapy. A psychologist has extensive training in diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. A psychologist usually has a doctorate of philosophy, but may, instead, have a doctorate of psychology or doctorate of education. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. The terms "psychiatrist" and "psychologist" are also legal terms with legal meanings. These professionals must have certain degrees and pass standards set by the state. They are legally registered with the state. Specific ethical codes exist regarding their conduct. These requirements may change from state to state. There are many fine counselors and therapists who have degrees in counseling, clinical social work, and related mental health fields. Check for credentials and memberships in professional organizations. Many specialize in certain areas, such as marital therapy, family therapy, addictions, sexual problems, or eating disorders.
