Diet For A Healthy Mouth

The food we eat affects the health of our mouth, and this directly affects our overall nutritional health. The mouth, teeth, and gums need adequate hygiene to remain healthy. Selecting a diet that promotes a healthy mouth is important.

Some foods promote tooth decay. These include:

  • sugar
  • candy
  • desserts and pastries
  • dried fruit
  • honey and
  • high sugar beverages such as beer, soda, and fruit juices

The more often sugar or sugary foods are eaten, the more likely tooth decay and root cavities will occur. When you do consume foods high in sugar, give your teeth a good cleaning afterwards.

Some foods have been shown to be protective against cavities, including cheese and other dairy products. Protein in dairy products appears to bind to the outer tooth and prevent bacteria from sticking to the tooth surface. Calcium in dairy products may also protect the teeth. Other foods that are less likely to promote tooth decay include meats, vegetables, cooked cereals, unsweetened breads and pastas, and some fresh fruits such as apples.

When you snack, choose healthy foods such as:

  • fresh fruit
  • raw vegetables
  • popcorn
  • whole grain cereal with low-fat milk and
  • cheese

And try not to snack just before bed, since saliva flow is low during sleep. If you do not take good care of your teeth, sore gums or even tooth loss may affect your ability to eat a healthy diet.

Take care of your teeth and see your dentist regularly.
