Early pregnancyEven if you have wanted a baby, finding out that you are pregnant may come as a surprise. If you become pregnant without planning to do so, the news may not be welcome. Mixed feelings in early pregnancy are normal. You may feel thrilled at the thought of being a mother. You may feel sad that you will have less time with your partner. You may feel angry or frightened if you did not want to be pregnant. If you lost a previous pregnancy in a miscarriage, early pregnancy can also be an anxious time. Hormonal changes occur at this time. Many women experience nausea and vomiting, breast tenderness, and an overwhelming feeling of fatigue. The need to urinate frequently is common. All these changes make early pregnancy a time of many adjustments. If you were not planning a pregnancy, there are personal issues you must confront in these early weeks of pregnancy. Will you continue the pregnancy or not? Will you choose to keep and raise the child? A counselor, healthcare provider, or trusted member of the clergy can help you explore your options. If you choose, you may invite your partner or a family member to participate in these discussions. Get a pregnancy test after you miss a menstrual period or have other signs of pregnancy, such as morning nausea or breast tenderness. Use a home pregnancy test or see your healthcare provider. If your test is positive, make an appointment to start prenatal care. If your test is negative but you feel you could be pregnant, see your healthcare provider. Early pregnancy is the time most miscarriages happen. If you have had a miscarriage before, talk with your healthcare provider when you think you might be pregnant. Signs of miscarriage can be cramping or bleeding. Contact your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about your health and well being during your pregnancy.
