Rape

Rape is sexual intercourse that is performed without consent and done mainly by force or deception. Anyone can be raped. It is estimated that 1.3 rapes occur every minute in the United States. Isolation and vulnerability increase your chance of being raped.

Follow these precautions to avoid a potential rape or other sexual assault situation:

  • keep your home and car locked and secured
  • stay away from dark and deserted places when alone
  • be alert to strangers around you
  • choose your companions wisely
  • take a self-defense course
  • carry a loud whistle and use it to attract attention when in danger and
  • carry a self-defense spray such as pepper spray, if it is legal in your area

If you are raped:

  • contact the police or a rape crisis center
  • go to an emergency room for an examination, treatment for any injuries, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy
  • do NOT shower, bathe, or change clothes before undergoing a physical examination
  • have a nurse or rape crisis counselor present for support during the physical examination and evidence collection procedure
  • get counseling from a professional who specializes in helping victims recover from rape

Medical facts will be taken during the physical examination that can be used in criminal charges against the rapist.

Remember, rape is not the victim's fault. Rape victims experience a multitude of feelings including confusion, shame, anger, and fear.
