Chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the large air passages in the lungs called bronchi. It is caused by exposure to irritants such as smoking, pollution, allergens, or recurrent infections. Over time, this irritation causes the production of excessive mucous, airflow obstruction, and cough commonly known as "smoker's cough." A person with chronic bronchitis has a cough that produces large amounts of mucous most days of the month, 3 months of the year for 2 consecutive years.

The symptoms of chronic bronchitis get worse with time. Like emphysema, chronic bronchitis is known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It is the fourth leading and the most rapidly increasing cause of death in the United States.

Treatment of chronic bronchitis is directed toward reducing irritation in the bronchial tubes. This means quitting smoking and avoiding other sources of irritation such as pollution, dust, and secondhand smoke. Your doctor may prescribe medications called bronchodilators to relax and open the air passages of the lungs. It is also important to avoid a lung infection if possible. Receiving the one-time pneumonia shot and a yearly flu shot may be helpful. Frail and elderly persons may need the pneumonia shot every 5 years. If you have chronic bronchitis you should see your healthcare provider regularly and follow the treatment plan recommended for you.
