Orthotics: Lower Limb

The science that deals with the use of special devices that support weakened or abnormal joints or limbs is called orthotics. The most common orthotic devices are shoe inserts used to support the foot.

Foot orthotics are most often used in those who have:

  • abnormal walking or jogging style, where the foot is turned either inward or outward
  • high arches or
  • flat feet

Many foot problems result from improper support of the foot. These conditions include:

  • sprained ankles
  • knee swelling and pain
  • shin splints
  • bunions and hammertoes
  • plantar fasciitis
  • Morton's neuroma and
  • Achilles tendonitis

Orthotic devices may help to prevent or relieve these problems. If you have a foot, ankle, or knee problem that will not clear up, see your healthcare provider. Orthotics may help, but cannot correct all foot, ankle, and knee problems. They will not remedy improper sports technique or overuse injuries.

You may be referred to a foot specialist who will make a molded insert to correct your foot problem. Be sure to wear them as directed.

Think about how often you are on your feet. They deserve special treatment. If you have foot pain, get some help. Your aching feet will be glad you did.
