Irritability

Irritability is a state of mind resulting in impatience or over-reaction.

This symptom may result from a wide range of stresses like:

  • major changes in life, such as divorce, death, or job stress
  • sleep deprivation
  • allergies
  • vitamin deficiencies
  • premenstrual syndrome and
  • seasonal affective disorder

Irritability usually is a short-term symptom. When it is on-going, or severe, it may be caused by something more serious like:

  • neurologic problems
  • substance abuse or
  • mental illness such as depression

Take steps to find the cause of irritability, especially if it is a constant problem. Seek medical evaluation when it affects normal daily living. Medical care can uncover and help treat the underlying problem.

Signs are:

  • not sleeping or eating right
  • overuse of drugs or alcohol or
  • inability to carry out daily activities

Counseling and stress management may reduce irritability. So can healthy habits. Try these:

  • stop or decrease the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink
  • get plenty of sleep
  • exercise regularly
  • take a relaxing long shower or bath
  • enjoy a massage and
  • share your feelings with a trusted friend
